The Less Glamorous Side of Scientific Research

This week, my research professor and two of our most senior lab members are at a conference.  That means for myself and the two remaining lab members, we’re left with the frustrating, but necessary job of inventory.

At the start of every summer, each research lab updates their chemical inventory.  This large spreadsheet includes the name, size/amount, and location of every chemical in a lab’s possession.  The ionlab has over 10 Excel pages of these chemicals and needless to say, it was definitely a large task inventorying them all.

In addition to the chemicals, I sorted through the almost one hundred vials at the triple quad station and disposed of the solutions that had degraded and/or were no longer necessary.  This task is definitely helpful in determining what compounds your lab has, where they are, and proper disposal techniques.
