After touring the Catalan parliament, I was invited to visit the city of Lleida by a municipal representative. She explained to me that as one of Catalonia’s main cities, leaders of the movement there would be interested in speaking to me about secession. I agree to the visit for the next week.

The Parliament

Barcelona

After a near 18hr delay on American Airlines, I arrived in Barcelona at 1am on July 2nd. Without the bus service running, a kind Catalan woman from my flight offered to split a taxi with me. In the taxi, I asked her what she thought of the independence movement. She simply claimed “I support it.” I arrived at my hostel around 3am, excited to learn more after my first interaction with a Catalan separatist.

Viva Cuba, inspiration for World Film Locations: Havana

Today’s post is dedicated to the continuity and growth of my Cuban cinema research, linking my current work to both my past and future projects.  Primarily, it will trace my relationship with a very special film, Viva Cuba, the film that first exposed me to the wonder of Cuban cinema.   By connecting my past interactions with the film to its current role in World Film Locations: Havana, I hope to illuminate how Cuban cultural investigation has influenced my growth as student researcher and global citizen.  In this sense, the post is a bit more personal than informational, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless…
