Quotable moments

Short quotes from the first day or so:

On the way down from the airport Sarah said, “I didn’t want my kids caught between two cultures feeling like they didn’t belong to either. But the only way to do that was to put them in school with Peruvians. And the schools here stink. So I made my own.”

Fern (a young women who lived with the missionary family I stayed with), on the morning ride to school: “This morning I was on the bus with a man totally covered with animal poop.”

One of the girls in my first class of first graders: “Tu eres bonita!” (on repeat). Then she kept touching my blonde hair. This confirms Isaiah’s observation of the peruvians fascination with white people’s features. This reminds me of how white people touch African-American’s hair.
