장애물 극복 (Overcoming Obstacles)

As a part of the Busan International Comedy Festival’s main event preparation, there are a few pre-events that take place in order to promote and draw attention to the upcoming festival. A few of these already took place such as the flash mob event at a middle and high school as well as the opening ceremony for the accepted volunteers. Another main event took place on Saturday was one of the most important pre-festival events. This event was the “BICF Showcase” where a few comedian and youtube guests came to help promote the festival.

This day started off quite well and the weather was nice for an hour or so. I arrived around 1 PM at the location of the event, Haeundae Beach’s famous Gunam-ro, a road that leads straight from the subway station all the way to the entrance of the beach. The road was lined with shops and restaurants and there were people and cars zipping up and down the street. First, I was assigned to help my team member glue the cue cards for the emcee to read off of. Then, I was asked to help fill the banner weights with water so they wouldn’t get knocked down. Finally, I was settled under one of the tents waiting for further instructions when a strong gust of air with an accompanying downpour of rain came through the location of the venue. The weather was already quite humid, and with this rain and the beach nearby, a layer of mist settled everywhere. All the employees were given ponchos as we set up the promotional boards and taped posters on the tables.

Festival Set-up

After the initial set up, I was sent along with my public relations team colleague and two volunteers to take a stack of pamphlets and walk along the beach path to promote the festival. We handed out pamphlets and let the tourists and locals know about the showcase and the upcoming festival dates and times. This was a new experience for me as I have never done this type of promotion before. I have never gone up to strangers and randomly given them a pamphlet while telling them about the festival and the showcase. At first, I was very shy and didn’t want to impede on their personal space, but after a little nudge of encouragement from another member on my team, I became more comfortable. She told me that everyone has things they are not comfortable doing but we need to do it because it is part of our job and role at the showcase. Despite a few rejections from people who refused to take a pamphlet, my colleague and I were able to give out the majority of our pile and draw attention to our festival. Later on, the festival began and I was in charge of the information table along with one other employee.

Promotional Tabling

Through new experiences, I find that I am able to overcome my fears and get over feeling uncomfortable when approaching a new obstacle. This event gave me the chance to overcome an obstacle that I have been having a hard time with recently: putting myself out there and drawing attention to myself as a foreigner in a city where I don’t know anyone. I feel like I overcame the uneasiness I associated with this challenge through the help of my colleague’s words of motivation. Looking around and seeing how much effort the other employees put into the event made me want to work even harder and contribute in any way I could.
