A Reflection on and Summary of my Zebrafish Research

Today as I reentered the zebrafish lab, I felt a sense of both accomplishment and victory. I had many goals coming into this summer which included producing high effort in the lab, managing my time effectively, and committing to the sometimes mundane process of research. Another one of these goals was to make a scientific impact through the finding of something different – a new test that biologists could use to test zebrafish with different types of manipulations. I am pleased with my performance over the summer as I felt I did what was necessary to be successful in research. This time, the kind of success I was striving for did not come; but with time, I believe there will be a breakthrough.

Some Last Thoughts

While it is true that I left lab a few weeks ago, it is not true that the work relating to my different projects is over. In fact, one could say that we are just getting started. What we were looking for was something compelling but we have not yet found it. In the fall, I think the lab will do some reflection in terms of which projects are worth our while to pursue and which are not. It takes time along with trial and error to achieve these answers.

Reflection and Intro to CPP

A few days ago, I expressed my frustration about recent testing procedures which did not pan out as intended. Lab goes on though, and another project is on the horizon.

The enigmatic zebrafish

Working with zebrafish in these recent weeks has been a genuine challenge. As I wrote in my previous blog post, the exceptionally simple procedure we used weeks ago did not work. Surprisingly, we saw no evidence that the fish were more interested in investigating new objects over familiar objects. In fact, the data seemed to suggest the opposite trend – that the fish prefer familiarity rather than novelty. We greeted this idea with healthy skepticism because previous research has shown that animals prefer novelty.

New information and developments in the zebrafish lab

Hello all,

After a few weeks in the zebrafish lab, mixed results have been obtained. Results are results, though, so I will take this post to share with you what we have gathered so far about the zebrafish and where we are headed in the coming weeks.
