Self-Efficacy in Community Lead Health Initiatives- Follow-up

The SOMOS team and the CdS certainly have a lot to show for our work this summer. Attached is the final version of the Health Prioritization Survey that we created. Over the next few months, CdS members will carry out this survey, and the results will help them to shape future health outcomes and access to health resources and education in their community. However, more than just the outcome of the survey, the results of our work are seen in the progress the CdS made this summer in building their capacity as a community health organization. Though the community still has a long way to go, the CdS will continue to play an influential role in enabling the community to take control of health outcomes and the resources that are available to them.

Self-Efficacy in Community Lead Health Initiatives Week 3 (part 2)

Our last meeting with the CdS brought a few disappointments, but was overall a success. Unfortunately, the only person that was able to attend the meeting was Mónica. However, she often plays a leadership role within the committee, and I think if any one person was going to show up I’m glad it was her. Fortunately she brought another community member with her and we were able to pilot the survey.

Self-Efficacy in Community Lead Health Initiatives Week 3 (part 1)

Going into the last week of our trip, we definitely began to feel the pressure. This week there were major developments for the engineering project. Though we are making progress in terms of helping the community to come to an informed decision that represents everyone’s views fairly, we are uneasy about how much still needs to be accomplished before the end of our trip.

Self-Efficacy in Community Led Health Initiatives Week 2

This Monday we held our first meeting with the Committee on Health (CdS). We began by talking about why we are interested in this research and what we hope to gain from this process. Committee members expressed the necessity of this work in finding out what is important to members of the community. One committee member explained that many people in the community often feel poorly but don’t understand why. The CdS hopes to provide information and resources to help the community have more control over their health, especially when they can’t access a doctor.

Self-Efficacy in Community Led Health Initiatives- Week 1

Though we met a few road blocks along the way, SOMOS summertime has finally arrived in the Dominican Republic. Zoe, Raya, and I are excited to be joined by SOMOS and William and Mary alumnus Kevin Salinas, especially as he happens to be a native speaker. We are comfortably settling into our apart-mansion in La Ciudad Universitario, surrounded by all the dominican comforts- a Pico Pollo across the street, a Bon up the block, and a grocery store nearby well stocked with fresh chinola.
