Teaching Geocoding

This week, my partner Carleigh Snead and I have started the first AidData Summer Fellows training session at Kathmandu University School of Arts. For our first week, we decided to train the faculty in a crash course of AidData style geocoding techniques and a basic introduction to ArcGIS Desktop. The week before, I spent an entire day installing ArcGIS Desktop to a small computer lab at the University. The process took hours, but eventually I was able to download enough copies to start faculty training.

Getting Started at Kathmandu University

It’s almost been a full week here in Kathmandu, Nepal, and Carleigh Snead (’15) and I have started working out the summer schedule for our work at Kathmandu University. Our work space is located at the cozy School of Arts campus, a smaller wing of Kathmandu located right outside the urban center of Patan. On one of our first days, Carleigh and I spent some time browsing the facilities. The School of Arts has a computer lab (where we will soon be installing ArcGIS), a library, plenty of office space and classrooms, and my personal favorite, a small canteen! I feel pretty lucky having such a great campus to work at this summer.

Aid and Development Research at Kathmandu University

Hey everyone! My name is Sara Rock, and I am currently a junior at the College of William and Mary. I’m an International Relations and Chinese Double Major and have been interning at AidData Center for Development Policy for the last two semesters. I’m very excited to introduce our readers to AidData’s upcoming summer fellowship in Kathmandu, Nepal! To start off, I’ll explain what kind of research AidData produces. AidData is an initiative which helps create a bank of data which tracks international aid projects. This organization, which just this year received millions of dollars from the government, actually started as a research collaboration between a William and Mary student and professor a few years back. Today, AidData is a large network which collaborates with members from William and Mary, Brigham Young University, University of Texas and many other organizations in the field of development.
