Wow! This is SO cool. It makes me really happy that a W&M professor and students are carrying out research like this that will directly benefit the SAM children in Africa. I bet it is an incredibly moving and rewarding experience to be out in the field conducting the research, to be able to see the benefits of your research with your very own eyes. I am looking forward to following your research. Good luck with the forms' translations and acceptability trials.

This is fascinating! I'm sure it was very frustrating to have to change your research focus this summer, but the concept of co-rumination intrigues me even more than what you originally planned to do. I'm definitely going to read up on it. I look forward to reading about what you find once you are able to get full permission from parents and everything. From your other post, I'm sure that's been quite frustrating as well! But once you get all the logistics out of the way, you'll be good to go!

Lucas, yours sounds extremely interesting as well! I look forward to seeing your results, because that is a part of Spain that I really know very little about (having spent the past two summers in Cádiz, Andalucía).

My initial question is whether you plan to look at the history of separatism in the region, because I know that Spain has gone through periods where more than one region has demanded independence and periods where the country seems relatively united. So I might want to know what the circumstances were in the past that caused Catalonia to call for separation and whether that is reflected in the sentiments that you're finding now.

Lucas! I take it you're the Lucas who is traveling to Grazalema with us tomorrow? How exciting!

Professor Cate-Arries, Kate, (Mike,) and I are really looking at objects related to the Republic—which can be very hard to find because it really was dangerous to hold on to them while Franco was in power—and also objects that children and grandchildren of the fusilados and desaparecidos have that tell a story and remind them of those they lost.

Our host mom keeps asking about seeking out interviews as well, but it really has come down to Prof. Cate-Arries having a lot of contacts from her last research project in Spain and they know people who they think will help us and put us in contact with them. The only surprising ones so far have been the day that Kate and I went for a walk with our host mom and she told us about the atrocities committed in the Castillo de San Sebastian (the one to the left of La Caleta) and the father of Arrancha (sp?) who gave us a really touching (if difficult to transcribe) interview.

See you tomorrow!

This sounds like a really interesting project! It's amazing that HP has developed such a resistance to conditions in the human stomach, and with such harmful consequences. And it's a shame that it would take so long for humans to in turn evolve a defense against this process, if it were even possible. But since we can't do it ourselves, it's vital that people investigate how to treat HP infections. I don't know exactly how this all works, but if your results show that acetone is indeed a trigger for the pathway, it would be great to then look into how to block this pathway in humans.

What interesting, creative research you are doing this summer! I read your initial post and find the information you have gathered so far very intriguing. I, too, wonder what you will find in the other quarters-- whether you will see more references to western influences and pop culture. I am also very interested in learning about what you believe to be the major differences in the graffiti of each of the quarters. Finally, I think that once you get the translations (as you said you would do upon getting back to the U.S.), it will be very helpful when making your research conclusions. Have you thought about talking to any of the people you encounter and asking them their opinions/interpretations of the graffiti? It might give you some very special insights.
Best of luck!

Thank you! There are two main final projects that I'm hoping to accomplish. The first is a public summary of my findings. This might take the form of blog posts, site posters, or any other medium, as long as it's accessible. The second product that I will be working on is a detailed guide/set of notes on lithic analysis in Virginia. Surprisingly, Virginia lithics are not very well studied, so anything I create can provide a framework for others who are interested in studying them.

Your research sounds very interesting, and as you pointed out, undeniably unique. It's great that you have the opportunity to work with other archaeologists, and to do so in a fairly local setting. Archaeology is a field whose importance could definitely use some illumination for the public eye, and your work leads me to wonder what final product you are hoping to achieve. I would love to see a visual of the work you've done so far, especially since so much of it has been extensive and understandably tedious. Looking forward to reading more about your work as the summer goes on!
