Right Writing

I know I mentioned in an earlier post (maybe the first one?) that I’m working on a second project this summer.  A writing project.  (Cue ominous music.)  A former student in the lab (who is currently a third year grad student at Johns Hopkins) left behind the draft of a manuscript that he and Dr. Heideman have been trying to finish for a few years.  Dr. H. gave me the reins on it for the summer because neither he nor Jordan are able to give it their full attention right now, but hopefully with me bugging them about it and doing my best to push it forward we can submit it to Hormones and Behavior by the deadline of September 30th.

A Day at UVA

Last Wednesday, a few members of the Heideman lab (myself, Adryan, Elise, Fine and Melissa) took a day trip to visit the Rissman lab at the University of Virginia.  Dr. Heideman did a post-doctoral position in Dr. Rissman’s lab, when he was making his transition from studying seasonal rhythms in bats in the field to studying the similar questions in a lab-based endocrinology/physiology context.  Dr. Rissman is an incredibly accomplished investigator in the field of neuroendocrinology (and has collected a few SBN accolades!) and is also one of the nicest, most approachable people I have ever met.  She and Dr. H. are old friends, and we were visiting for an informal tour of UVA’s neuroscience grad program.

Smitten with SBN in ATL

I returned to Thrilliamsburg yesterday from a three day stint in Atlanta at the 17th annual meeting of the Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology (SBN).  If the name seems a little overwhelming, you should have been there.  I feel like my brain has been wrung out like a sponge and left out to dry somewhere.  I think I’ll be using the coming weekend to locate it and attempt to get it working again, because if I came away with anything from this astounding, humbling, fascinating conference, it would be with the message that your brain is quite important.  (Serious understatement.)  This trip is by far going to be one of the highlights of my summer, and I feel moved by the experience.  Allow me to try to tell you a little bit about it.

Beginnings and Kinks

I feel that I should begin with a better explanation of what exactly my project is, before this post becomes a confusing, angry rant.  It might turn into a little bit of a rant (fair warning) but hopefully it will also make a little bit of sense.
