Recap of the Summer and Trip to Esfuerzo

In my previous post, I described the four protocols written before the trip to guide our field research in Esfuerzo de Paraíso, Dominican Republic. The JdV Inclusivity, Road, Electrification, and Health protocols each had goals and outlined methods to achieve them. In this post, I will describe how the trip went and how we were able to accomplish the goals we set out, even when things didn’t go as planned.

Improving SOMOS’ Ability to Navigate Esfuerzo

In less than two weeks, I will be back in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic for the second time this year. I am going with two other members of SOMOS and from August 8-16 we will be working on four main objectives related to community leadership, social inclusivity, access to energy, and improved health (my next blog post will describe these ‘protocols’ in greater detail).

Abstract – Facilitating the Development of Community Capacity and Self-Efficacy in Esfuerzo del Paraiso, Dominican Republic – Matthew Crittenden

This summer, I will be conducting research with the Student Organization for Medical Outreach and Sustainability (SOMOS) in Esfuerzo del Paraiso, Santo Domingo Norte, Dominican Republic. I will travel with other team members to the Dominican Republic, support our ongoing work in Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), conduct Social Network Analysis (SNA) and DTRA (domain, tasks, resources, activities) research, facilitate meetings with community members, collect spatial data, and complete an ArcGIS Story Map representation of SOMOS’s trailblazing partnership with the Esfuerzo community. Final Thoughts and Reflections

With the summer drawing to a close, I have realized that the data analysis will continue for some time into the semester. The SOMOS team will hopefully help give me some insight into the best way to approach the campaign against dengue in the community as I present more of my findings to them.
